Billie Zangewa was born in Malawi and raised in Botswana. She moved to Johannesburg after completing a Fine Art degree at Rhodes University. In the years following her 2004 debut solo show, Zangewa established a unique visual language where carefully sewn raw silk tapestries trace her journeys, perceptions and experiences of Africa and the world. Working mainly from informal photographs, many of the delicate fabric panels depict figurative urban scenes. Among other accolades, Zangewa has been the recipient of the Absa L’Atelier Gerard Sekoto Award in 2004 as well as a prestigious residency in Antwerp at Dak’art 2006.
