Arnold Daghani was born to a Jewish-Romanian family in 1909. His family was not particularly wealthy like many his contemporaries. After he finished military service he worked for a German traveler company for a few years were he traveled across Europe. However eventually he resettled in Bucovina, Romania and started his own family. Daghani and his family was a Holocast survivor. He was taken to Transinistria in 1942 along with the majority of Romanian Jews. Luckily, Daghani and his family managed to escape and were reallocated in the Bersad ghetto where they were later liberated by the Red Cross towards the end of the war, in 1944. Immediately after the war Daghani began to express his despair, anger and sadness into his painting and drawings were he managed to capture the dread of the camps in Tranisnitria and the ghetto. Most of his work deals with macabre subject matter. It is without a doubt that the reason for this was because of his awful gut wrenching experiences during the war. In fact we could go as His artwork is a cross between expressionism and surrealism but most importantly signified the pain that one must have felt as a Jew in Europe during World War 2. He was mostly into capturing the faces of people and more importantly the pain and sadness that enveloped their souls. Most of his work seems like a glimpse or window into the dreadful conditions of the camps but also of the desperation, hopelessness and disarray of the Jewish people as a whole.
