Every nuance of color or granularity, every fissure, speaks of event, happenstance, transformation. Like a dialogue the creation begins where the stone is found, continues in a spirit of gladness in the find as it is transported back home, and finally in the new form which it takes on.

Wholly under the spell of the mineral realm, they travel the world, spend their free time on mountains and in quarries, listening for the silent signals with which uncut stones, unattractive for the most part to the passing glance, appeal to be chosen. The nature and the surface variations of the stones they choose to transform are of the deepest, most carefully weighed importance. The Kubach-Wilmsens seem to have a sixth sense concerning the possible inner qualities of a given rock, and they can feel and visualize which stone already contains the soul of the sculpture they will create from it. They believe that their function as artists is to liberate and interpret the secret content, the soul, of a given stone, so as to make it readable and understandable.
