SIGN UP or LOG IN
Provenance:
Painted in Western Arnhem Land circa 1960s Private collection A significant Mildjingi ceremonial leader, Mick Magani created an array of small bark paintings and carvings depicting a variety of ancestral figures and animals during his time living in Milingimbi, Maningrida and later at the place of his birth, Gatji Creek. This archetypal image shows an ancestral figure, possibly a hunter, surrounded by various totemic animals. The bold jagged lines, which delineate and shape these ancestral inhabitants, render the complex waterways of Magani's homelands. The selective application of rarrk, identifies the metaphysical relationships between the painted ancestral figure, the animals and the landscape.
