SIGN UP or LOG IN
Markings:
signed in Cyrillic script, dated 1892
Provenance:
European private collection We are grateful to Dr. Olga Sugrobova-Roth for her assistance in cataloguing this work. The Imperial art academy in St. Petersburg awarded the prize for the best landscape painter from funds provided for this purpose by the Endogourov brothers until 1917 (the younger Sergei was also a landscape painter). The son of Rear Admiral Endogourov, landscape and marine painter Ivan Endogourov lived only until the age of 37 and thus his works are fairly rare. Consequently, the return of a Moonlit Night in Ajaccio in Winter to the Russian State Museum in 2000, believed to have been lost after WWII, was a very special event. Endogourov was one of the great lyricists in the history of Russian painting, and representations of still waters was an important theme in his works (see: The Pond in the museum in Odessa, The Mountain Lake near Munich in the museum in Archangel).
