LOT DETAILS

Materials:

Oil on canvas laid down on panel

Size Notes:

Oil

Condition:

The canvas has been cut and laid down on panel; this panel is sound. The edges have been covered with red paper tape. There appear to be two horizontal repaired tears to the canvas, one to the upper left edge and one to the upper right edge. There are further lines of horizontal cracking to the canvas in the upper half. There is a fine network of crazing visible throughout. There is a faint raised crease running vertically through the center of the composition, visible under raking light. Under UV light, there are patches of old retouching to the center of the composition, including the figure, above the figure and a few strokes to the left of the figure. Subsequent more recent inpainting can be seen in some small areas, notably to the top left quadrant and in a few places elsewhere. A thick layer of opaque varnish prevents more conclusive examination. The work is in overall good condition. In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion. NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
