Condition:

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc., New York, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's: This work has not been recently restored. The canvas is lined. The surface is visibly dirty. The paint layer shows no signs of abrasion. Retouches are not clearly identifiable under ultraviolet light due to a thick old varnish. However, retouches have blanched in the lighter colors and are visible to the naked eye. In the sky, there are two restorations on the right side, a small restoration in the center, and a large restoration in the upper left directly above the cliff. The edges show a few small losses, and there are a few tiny losses in the lower left corner. The reflection of the canoe in the water has weakened noticeably, but this does not appear to have been restored. There is a small damage above the right end of the canoe, and some subtle staining in the blue water in the center. There is a diagonal scratch to the varnish above the left end of the canoe. There are presumably other retouches that are not apparent beneath the varnish, but probably none of any note. ?The lot is sold in the condition it is in at the time of sale.
