Rasheas Mukwaira

(Zimbabwean , b. 1975 )

Born in the rural area of Chiweshe, Zimbabwe in 1975, Rasheas Mukwaira, the second child in a family of six, along with his two brothers and three sisters, is from the Zezuru tribe. After he was able to complete his secondary education in 1992 at Bare School in Chiweshe, Rasheas started working at the well renowned Tengenenge Art Community as a printer and a sign writer. The Director, Tom Blomefield, took interest in Rasheas's talent and encouraged him to start painting on canvas. Once he got involved with this, it did not take him long to begin sculpting. He learned most of his skills apprenticing under one of the residing accomplished sculptors, Bernard Matemera. Since that time, Rasheas has never looked back. He is now an accomplished sculptor in his own right, highly skilled and comfortable working with some of the hardest stones available. In 1997, one of his sculptures entitled Leaf Head was displayed at the University of Twente, in The Netherlands.
