Lawrence Weiner

(American , b. 1942 )

One on the central figures of the Conceptual art movement that emerged in the 1960s and 1970s, Lawrence Weiner (b.1942) utilizes language as the primary vehicle to challenge our traditional assumptions of what constitutes a work of art. For example, his installations may consist solely of nondescript lettering painted on walls, not necessarily done by artist, but rather following his instructions. More recently, in 1997, Weiner expanded his artistic boundaries to create 'Homeport', an online environment in which the space is defined by linguistic rather than geographic features. Recent solo exhibitions of his work have been mounted at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C. (1990), Institute of Contemporary Arts, London (1991), Dia Center for the Arts, New York (1991), Musee d’Art Contemporain, Bordeaux (1991 and 1992), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1992), Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (1994), Philadelphia Museum of Art (1994), and Museum Ludwig, Cologne (1995).
