Hana Mal-Allah

(Iraqi , b. 1958 )

Hana Mal-Allah is a painter and printmaker in Baghdad.  She is widely regarded as the leading female artist from Iraq.

Hana received her B.F.A., M.F.A. and doctoral degree in the philosophy of art from the Academy of Fine Arts in Baghdad. She continues to teach and lecture at the college while pursuing her painting. She points to Shakir Hassan Al Sayad, one of the Iraqi “Pioneers” of the 1950s, as her most influential teacher.

“I loved and respected him not only because he taught me how to paint, but because he taught me how to write, how to live, and how to incorporate mysticism in my life and my art.”

Notable among Hana’s exhibitions are the National Museum of Modern Art in Amman, Jordan (1997); the Institute du Monde Arabe in Paris (2000); and “Women Artists of the Islamic World” sponsored by UNESCO in Spain and Paris (2003). Her works have been exhibited in London galleries, first with the “Strokes of Genius” exhibition at Brunei Gallery (2000) and at the “Expressions of Hope” exhibition at Ayagallery (2003). Her works are held by the Royal Jordanian Museum and private collections worldwide.
